A Celestial weekend with 59 North Sailing

Keeping in the spirit of putting lockdown time to good use, I joined Andy Schell and August Botne Sandberg of 59 North Sailing over the weekend for the 2nd part of their virtual Celestial Navigation workshop.

If you guys haven’t heard of Andy and Mia’s 59 North Sailing business before then check out their web site and especially Andy’s “on the wind” podcast, he interviews some great people, lots of sailing inspiration to be had there for when you can’t get on the water.

Anyway, I may not be the brightest of stars, but I think I’ve just about nailed the basics, on paper at least, now I need to get some sea time to put it all into practice.

It also gave me a great excuse to “play” with my new Horizon Ultra sextant thanks to the team at Cassens & Plath GmbH. I hope I’m going to do it justice eventually, but for the moment I’m contenting myself to taking wildly inaccurate (due to the lack of any horizon) sun and star sights in the garden, just for the practice.
