The Golden Globe Race is a challenge like no other. Competitors taking part will find themselves alone for close to 300 days at sea, with no outside assistance. They’ll race through some of the world’s most hostile environments with the same technology as the skippers taking part in the inaugural 1968 edition of the race.
Ian lives with his wife and three children in land-locked Shropshire in the heart of England, but whenever possible sails in the Irish Sea out of Pwllheli in North Wales. He first learned to sail while serving with the British Army over 20 years ago, where he served as an avionics engineer in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers.
Puffin is a Tradewind 35 design by John Rock, a very rugged design, with flush a deck, long keel and sea kindly motion, she is made for long-distance voyaging. Puffin has been further strengthened to withstand the rigours of the Southern Ocean and the Golden Globe Race.
